Every so often a deal comes along that looks, on the surface, like one retailer buying space from another. This one isn't that. Asda and Amazon have struck a partnership that changes how ads get served on Asda.com, and it's worth understanding properly before it shows up in a budget conversation.
In this month's #AskVector, we break down what the deal actually is, why Asda made the move, and what it means for brands already running Amazon campaigns.
This is not about buying ads on Amazon
Asda isn't buying Amazon inventory. It's licensing Amazon's ad technology to run sponsored products inside its own store. The same ad stack your brand already uses will soon power sponsored products on a major UK grocer's website.
That distinction matters. This isn't Asda placements showing up on Amazon. It's Amazon's infrastructure showing up on Asda.
Why Asda made this move
Asda is in the middle of a significant technology overhaul, with the ambition to develop a more competitive digital and retail media proposition. The rollout is phased from Q4 2026, so treat it as a planning signal for now rather than an immediate activation opportunity.
Providing the infrastructure of UK retail media
Brands are currently managing an average of six retail media networks, projected to reach 11 by the end of the year. The Asda deal moves in the opposite direction. Amazon's technology running underneath other retailers' stores could reduce that fragmentation rather than add to it.
Familiar tools, new reach, which budget?
If you're already running Amazon campaigns, Asda is reach extension using the same tools and reporting framework you already know. The question isn't whether to be there. It's whether Asda comes out of your Amazon budget or your grocery retail budget. Those are different conversations with different teams, and worth having early.
It's not live yet, but now is when to plan
Amazon Retail Ad Service rolls out on Asda.com in phases from Q4 2026. There's nothing to activate today. But the strategic question of where Asda fits in your retail media mix, once it runs on Amazon's ad stack, is worth working through before budgets are set.
Taking action
We know Amazon from every angle. Which means we're already thinking about Asda.
Want to work through what this means for your retail media strategy? #AskVector
